Century Club Matches Tied After 40 Years
Amateurs Earn 14-10 Victory at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club
Event Overall Series is 19-19-2
The 40th edition of the Century Club Matches began play deadlocked at 19-19-1 and finished tied at 12-12, leaving the overall total series record at 19-19-2. To say it was evenly matched is an understatement.
Both teams were tied after day one in the Pinehurst Scotch format. The Amateur team of Pat Duncan Sr. and Pat Duncan Jr. birdied holes 13-17 in a row to finish one-up over Professionals Greg Casagranda and Chris Starkjohann and to tie the first day of play.
The second day earned the Professionals a 3.5 to 2.5 advantage during the Better Ball format to lead 6.5 to 5.5 going into the final day. Professionals Ross Marcano and Chris Starkjohann won their match 5 & 4. Both players combined to birdie five holes on the back nine and shot 8-under-par through 14 holes.
During the Individual Match play on the final day, in the second to last match, Buddy Duncan halved his match with Chris Starkjohann to setup the dramatic action on the final hole. Professional Gary Sowinski made a 15- foot birdie putt on the final hole, forcing Amateur Pat Duncan, Sr. to hole his 8-foot putt to keep the match at all square and overall series in tied after 40 years.
