Military Appreciation Activities
Over $500,000 Donated to Military Personnel and their Families.
It has been proven many times over that The Farmers Insurance Open is much more than a professional golf tournament. Over the years, a strong bond has been built between The Century Club of San Diego and our local military community.
As Tom Wornham, 2010 President of The Century Club likes to recall, "What started out as cold hot dogs and warm sodas in 2003 has expanded into a multiple array of activities for our military. In an effort to partner with all branches of the service and the local commands The Century Club has tried to coordinate our best 'Thank you'."
Kicking off the week is the Military Appreciation Luncheon set for Tuesday, January 26, an invitation-only event for select active duty military. During the 2009 Military Appreciation event, The Century Club presented checks to military representatives totaling $100,000; bringing the five year total of the Military Appreciation Activities to over $500,000.
Throughout tournament week The Century Club will also carry on the tradition of an on-course Military Appreciation Pavilion that was created in 2008. The Military Appreciation Pavilion is located on the 14th Green and is open to all active duty military personnel and their immediate families. Complimentary food and beverages will be provided by Donovan's Steak and Chophouse.
One of the major new activities is the Military Appreciation Tournament that will be held on Saturday, January 30. Nearly 100 active duty personnel who have deployed overseas will be given the opportunity of playing the Torrey Pines North course, while the course is set up under PGA TOUR conditions. Many local individuals and businesses will support the Military Appreciation Tournament through tax deductible contributions that The Century Club will later distribute to local offices of more than a dozen military oriented charities.
As always, The Century Club offers complimentary admission to all active duty military personnel and members of their immediate family during tournament week. The introduction of the Military Appreciation Tournament was just another way for The Century Club to say thank you to local military and their families.
"I have had the honor of growing up in a military family. One grandfather was a Rear Admiral, the other a Lt. General (USMC). My father and uncle served in the Marines and my father-in-law is a retired Navy Captain. There is no way any organization or community can ever do enough to say thank you to those who serve our nation," reiterates Tom Wornham.
