Jay Hwang of San Diego earned the Sponsors Exemption to participate in the 2012 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines with his win at the 28th annual Farmers Insurance Open Amateur Qualifying event held at Torrey Pines South golf course.
Hwang, who is a freshman at UCLA and is a Torrey Pines High school alum, shot a four-under-par 68 to earn a spot in the upcoming PGA TOUR event scheduled for January 23-29. The starting field consisted of top local and regional players that included all 100 players, with a 0 or better handicap. The event is sponsored by Century Club of San Diego.
Only three players have made the professional cut in the previous 22 years which include Pat Duncan in 50th place in 1986, Steve Haase 75th place in 1989 and Charley Hoffman in 76th place in 1996.
